Blood is carried from the heart to
all parts of your body in vessels called arteries. Blood pressure is the force
of the blood pushing against the walls of the arteries. Blood pressure is
always given as a two numbers, the systolic and diastolic pressures. Both
numbers are important. High blood pressure is a blood
pressure reading of 140/90 mmHg or higher. Blood pressure changes during the
day. It is lowest as you sleep and rises when you get up. It also can rise when
you are excited, nervous, or active. Nearly 1 in 3 American adults has high
blood pressure. Many people may not know they have it until they have trouble
with their heart, brain, or kidneys.
If blood pressure is high, it could lead to kidney damage and stroke, so
it is important to keep normal blood pressure, however lowering blood pressure with
prescription drugs may have unfortunate side effects. Diuretics cause the loss
of valuable electrolytes (minerals), thereby predisposing the person to cardiac
arrhythmia. Beta-blockers alter lipid levels and can worsen the tendency to
type-II diabetes, which can lead to the same adverse outcome as elevated blood
pressure. Similar problems have been found with calcium channel blockers and
even with the new ACE inhibitors.
High Blood Pressure (Hypertension) can lead to:
- The
heart getting larger, which may lead to heart failure.
- Small
bulges (aneurysms) can form in blood vessels of the main artery from the
heart, arteries in the brain, legs, intestines, and the spleen.
- Blood
vessels in the kidney narrowing, which may cause kidney failure.
- Arteries
throughout the body "harden" faster, especially those in the
heart, brain, kidneys, and legs. This can cause a heart attack, stroke,
kidney failure, or amputation of part of the leg.
- Blood
vessels in the eyes to burst or bleed which may cause vision changes and
can result in blindness.
Nutritional support is very important in regulating and keeping blood
pressure stable. If we consider the fact that in this condition, the
circulation is working too hard to nourish the cells, then it seems reasonable
that some of the causes of high blood pressure include excess weight,
electrolyte imbalances, lack of exercise, fluid overload due to poor kidney
function, stress, fatty-acid imbalances, deficiency of omega-3 fatty acids and
too much Trans fat in the diet.
These imbalances must be corrected and maintained for the life time. This
means taking nutritional complete food supplements, making dietary, and life
style changes, restricting carbohydrates intake, which will help with weight
loss and lower insulin levels, thereby helping your body eliminate excess fluid
and burn excess fat, and regular exercise program. Finally, studies have repeatedly shown that
the regular practice of some sort of meditation or relaxation can be very
successful in treating hypertension.
High Blood Pressure is an important clue from your body of the
underlying problem, and if you don’t address the cause you will likely end up
with more serious problems down the road. If you are looking for a long-term
