Nutrition and Brain Chemistry: Our Food Choices Are Destroying Our Brains
NeuroWellness

We've been told over and over that our food choices are contributing to degenerative diseases like cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. Maybe it is time that we explore the possibility that our food choices are destroying our brains too.

Food used to be fresh, brilliantly-colored vegetables and fruits, rich brown grains, non-pasteurized milk, butter and yogurts rich with enzymes and active proteins, meats from free-range grass-fed stock, fish from living rivers and oceans. Food used to be something we ate to give strength to our bodies, to heal us when we were sick and to satisfy our appetite after a day filled with purpose and work.

Food is different now, and we are different too. It is artificially produced at "food manufacturing companies." Does it look, taste or smell like the real thing? No. Our "food" now comes in boxes, packages, and cans; and is packed with artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, pesticides and toxic chemicals that starve both our body and our brain.

Over processed food is often devoid of life (enzymes, etc) and low in nutrients. The effect of poor food is that we drag ourselves around in constant fatigue, confusion, forgetfulness, and pain. We suffer from depression, anxiety, insomnia, rage, and ADHD/ADD. Instead of eating to feed our physical needs, we eat to satisfy artificial cravings generated by our brain that is starved, confused and constantly stimulated by chemicals. We walk around bloated, full of gas, and indigestion, and we have a pill and "quick fix" for everything. But is it really a fix? If you want to be healthy, happy, full of energy, enthusiastic, focused, and productive you must first feed your body and brain with healthy food and nutrition.

At NeuroWellness we understand the challenges every American is confronted with every day. "Junk food" is addictive, it tastes good, and it makes you feel good for a while. This is especially true if you are depressed, lonely, stressed out, or feeling hopeless. It may be convenient, but it the cost to our bodies is extremely high. Here are some facts to consider:
* Americans spent $117 billion in obesity-related economic costs in 2003
* An estimated 300,000 Americans die each year from fat-related causes
* In 2000, Americans spent more than $110 billion on fast food alone
* Americans now spend more money on fast food than on higher education, personal computers, computer software or new cars.
* Americans spend up to an estimated $50 billion a year on diet and weight loss
* The food industry has a $30 billion advertising budget
* McDonald's reportedly spent $500 million on one ad campaign, while the National Cancer Institute spends about $1 million a year to promote eating five daily servings of fruits and vegetables
* Junk food advertisements target children as young as 3 years old
* Junk food marketers spent an estimated $15 billion in 2002 solely on marketing aimed at children

The irony is the healthy food message is no match for the advertising budget of the "junk food" companies. Our children are being raised in a world where fake, processed foods are the norm. They drink soda, eat French fries regularly, and face devastating health conditions early in life.
